What's The Magic Word, Kids?
The world used to be an orderly place. At the top were the highly-educated business people, and right at the bottom were... children's entertainers. Yes, even lower than street sweepers. At least street sweepers don't have to wear stupid hats, and don't run the risk of being pelted with half-chewed sweet things by a group of small children ruined by television. And then laughed at. By everyone. While the dove escapes and the rabbit makes a nest under the couch.
Things, however, are changing.
Terrifyingly.
Creeping up from the sea like rolling fog, magic is seeping back into the world... and it's taking the path of least resistance. The men in the black hats or the sad boxes of balloons already had a system of calling on whatever power the universe had to offer, albeit through made up words and dramatic gestures. What are mystic incantations if not that exactly? It's all about attitude, and it takes some of that to periodically make a fool of oneself in front of a judgmental public time and time again.
Maybe it happened because there happened to be so many conjurers and magicians in the region. Maybe it happened because some chest long hidden in a shipwreck was shifted by undersea tides until it smashed open against some rocks. The question is academic, however, because it has happened. Magic is real - and in the hands of the magicians.
It's been like this for only a few weeks, but already it's having effects. Some are using their new powers for personal gain; some are so frightened by their new abilities that they've given up the jobs that gave it to them. Although the magic is channeled through the magician in question's main act, some are developping different powers. Elemental powers. Dangerous powers.
And you thought that visiting a little seaside city would be relaxing?
